How to Store GLP-1 Peptides Correctly

Proper storage of GLP-1 research peptides is essential for maintaining their activity and purity. GLP-1 receptor agonist peptides — particularly those with fatty acid chain modifications like semaglutide and retatrutide — have specific storage requirements that differ somewhat from simpler linear peptides. Incorrect storage can lead to degradation, aggregation, and loss of biological activity.

Lyophilized (Powder) Storage

Lyophilized peptides are in their most stable form. The freeze-drying process removes water, which is the primary driver of hydrolytic peptide degradation. In lyophilized form, GLP-1 receptor agonist peptides can be stored for extended periods — typically up to 24 months — without significant loss of purity when conditions are appropriate.

Reconstituted Solution Storage

Special Considerations for Fatty Acid-Modified Peptides

Semaglutide, retatrutide, and cagrilintide all incorporate fatty acid chains that enable albumin binding and extend their half-life. These fatty acid modifications introduce a specific stability consideration: under certain conditions — particularly at high concentrations, at extremes of pH, or following repeated freeze-thaw cycles — the fatty acid chains can self-associate, forming aggregates.

Aggregated peptide is not only less biologically active (the receptor-binding face may be obscured), but may also produce unexpected results in research. Aggregates can sometimes be reversed by gentle warming and swirling, but prevention is more reliable than remediation.

Practical mitigation: avoid freezing reconstituted fatty acid-modified peptides, avoid high-concentration reconstitution (2 mg/mL is generally safer than 5 mg/mL), and avoid vigorous agitation at any stage.

Aliquoting for Multiple Uses

If a reconstituted peptide solution will be used across multiple experiments or dosing events, aliquoting into individual single-use volumes before storage is good practice. This minimises the number of times the main stock vial is opened (reducing contamination risk) and, if single-use aliquots are frozen (at -20°C in small volumes, immediately after reconstitution before significant solution degradation occurs), allows longer effective storage.

For fatty acid-modified peptides, the recommendation against freezing reconstituted solution means that immediate use after reconstitution is preferable where possible. If the entire reconstituted volume will be used within 28 days, refrigerator storage is appropriate without aliquoting.

Transport Considerations

When transporting lyophilized peptides, a standard cool pack maintained around 0–8°C is sufficient for transport periods up to 24–48 hours. Reconstituted solutions should be transported refrigerated and minimally agitated. Neither form should be exposed to temperatures above ambient room temperature for extended periods.
